About the Speaker

Survey Statistician for the U.S. Census Bureau

Tyson Weister is a survey statistician on the U.S. Census Bureau’s communications team for centralized data dissemination. In this role, he engages data users and helps them navigate data.census.gov, Microdata Access, and the application programming interface (API). Weister holds bachelor’s degrees in economics and public affairs from Indiana University, and a master’s degree in communication from Purdue University.

Example questions might include:

  • How many people in the Inland Empire with some college/no degree are also parents, and does this vary by race/ethnicity?
  • How many people are employed in specific industry sectors in the Inland Empire, disaggregated by gender, race/ethnicity, and educational attainment?
  • In what counties do members of the IE workforce live, and how many of various age groups and occupations commute into vs outside of the IE?

Tyson will provide information about

  • When, why, and how to use the Microdata Access Tool
  • The differences between microdata vs aggregate data available in pre-made tables.
  • Creating custom tables for your geographies of interest within the Inland Empire
  • Resources to learn more about navigating the pre-made tables on data.census.gov

Attendees will also be shown where to download the raw microdata files in case users want to work with it in their own statistical software from MDAT and the FTP site. However, the training will be geared toward people without access to specialized software or skillsets.
