Building Better from Disruption

Building Better from Disruption is a virtual webinar series developed collaboratively by Growing Inland Achievement (GIA), Riverside County Office of Education (RCOE), and San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS) with support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The goal of the series is to build upon lessons learned from districts’ responses to the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on schools and school systems. With guidance from regional experts including, Miki Inbody, Amanda Corridan, and Cynthia Glover Woods, the content is designed to provided education partners, particularly administrators and teacher leaders working at the school site level, with best practices and resources that support students’ successful return to in-person instruction.  The series focuses on the essential areas of social-emotional learning, accelerated learning, and community partnerships.  During each session, participants will have the opportunity to learn, connect, and interact with expert practitioners and session participants.

The Importance of Student Voice

Listening and understanding the voice of students are essential aspects of social emotional learning.  In this webinar participants will hear from school leaders that are implementing innovative strategies that capture and utilize student voice to create positive and equitable learning environments.

Strengthening Adult Capacity Through Teacher and Staff Voice

Supporting the social emotional needs of the adults in schools is necessary for student success.  In this webinar, teachers, school leaders, and district leaders will share best practices and strategies that have been implemented to strengthen the capacity of adults and provide the support needed for staff and student success.

Culturally Responsive Teaching: Redefining Student Success with an Equity Lens

This session will provide educators with a safe space to engage in educational equity work through taking a deep dive into concepts that support the develop of an authentic commitment to redefining student success with an equity lens. Participants will learn how to move from theory to practice through utilizing numerous tools for practical application and facilitation of equity work. Content will center around mindsets and beliefs while creating a parallel between adaptive and technical work in the school system to interrupt inequitable practices and close equity gaps for marginalized student groups. Topics and outcomes include:

  • Develop common language, define equity, diversity, and inclusion to guide facilitation of conversations and the work
  • Develop an understanding of research around the 4 indicators of equity to address instructional practices and academic achievement
  • Develop an understanding of collecting, analyzing, and monitoring qualitative and quantitative data to drive equity work in the classroom
  • Recognize and respond to the barriers to equity and cultural proficiency (i.e. history of public education, implicit bias, stereotypes, and institutional racism)
  • Reflect on the role of educators in perpetuating or ending educational gaps
  • Understand a system’s approach to interrupting patterns of inequities within the school system

Dr. Nicole Anderson

Founder and CEO of Nicole Anderson and Associates Consulting LLC

Nicole Anderson, Founder and CEO of Nichole Anderson and Associates Consulting LLC, has served in education for close to 25 years in the role of teacher, coach, as well as principal in Vallejo, Ca, where she started her career at Jesse M. Bethel High School (the namesake of her grandfather). She played the role of Equity Executive for the Association of California School Administrators to support equity leadership across school districts. While she continues to support school districts, non-profits, and city leadership to build capacity to lead for educational and racial equity, she also partners with the California School Boards Association and the Association of California School Administrators to provide equity focused professional development services for school boards and educational leaders around the state of California. She continues to follow in the footsteps of her grandfather, Mr. Jesse M. Bethel, in her quest to close educational equity gaps in schools.

Dr. Shaun Harper

Provost Professor of Management and Organization; Clifford and Betty Allen Chair in Urban Leadership; USC Race and Equity Center Executive Director

Dr. Shaun Harper is a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) expert. He teaches MBA students and advises CEOs and leaders on DEI strategy. Professor Harper has worked with more than 400 businesses, firms, and educational institutions. He has published 12 books and over 100 academic publications. Foundations have awarded him $16 million in research grants. His research has been cited in over 16,000 published studies. The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and hundreds of other news outlets have quoted Shaun and featured his research. He has interviewed on CNN, ESPN, NBC News, and NPR. Prior to USC, Dr. Harper was a tenured full professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

 

Accelerate Learning: Models and Structures

High Impact Strategies and Practices to Accelerate Learning

In this webinar, we will hear from practitioners who are using different methods and structures to accelerate student learning.  These practitioners have moved beyond a focus on learning loss and are implementing innovative strategies and programs to provide students with instruction that builds from where they are with the goal of accelerating their learning to achieve current grade level/ course standards.
